For the City College of San Francisco’s Festival of the Moving Image, I interpreted the theme Action—Reaction using a domino effect motif. The left-aligned dominoes represent both physical chain reactions and broader social ripple effects. A bold red background heightens tension between the first and second domino, while diagonal typography adds dynamic movement. My goal was to capture the intense, moody atmosphere requested by the client and invite viewers into the festival’s narrative.

Sketches

I started by researching the theme Action—Reaction for inspiration. In my sketches, I explored different ways to convey the theme through typography and imagery, experimenting with layouts that balanced visual impact while leaving space for essential text.

Iterations

I illustrated the dominoes in Adobe Illustrator and matched the text color to them for a cohesive look. Later, I brightened the overall colors of both the image and text to enhance visibility and impact. I also adjusted the text size and rearranged the logos for better balance and clarity.

Final

In the final stage, I added and refined the event information to ensure accuracy. Throughout this project, I leaned heavily on Illustrator and discovered my ability to illustrate concepts without relying on stock images. One key challenge was illustrating the dominoes in a way that effectively conveyed the theme, but overcoming it helped bring my vision to life.
